Language: English
Region: Europe
Source: https://repository.cardiffmet.ac.uk/handle/10369/5055
Excerpt: This study investigated the affects of shoulder injuries on participation and performance amongst competitive badminton players. Questionnaires were used to accumulate quantitative data from a sample of 37 participants, both male (26) and female (11) from various badminton clubs in South Wales. Thirty percent of participants reported a shoulder problem during the 2010-2012 seasons, and most injuries were either chronic on-going problems or a singular acute incident. It was discovered that the affects of injury had a negative impact on performance, with pain, anxiety and a lack of range of moti

The implicit achievement motive and general life stress affect time spent on competitive matches in racquet sports

Excerpt: The match time spent on court in racquet sports can be perceived as dependent on the effort an athlete is willing to exert in a competition. Achievement motivation is defined as the effort a person spends on a difficult task with the completion of which she wants to meet a personal standard of excellence, wants to improve herself, or outperform others (McClelland, Atkinson, Clark, & Lowell, 1953). Fifty-two professionals of three racquet sports (tennis, table tennis, and badminton) filled in a questionnaire on their explicit achievement motive, a scale on general life stress, and a measur

The importance of being elastic: deflection of a badminton racket during a stroke

Category: Engineering and Technology
Author: Kwan, M. & Rasmussen, J.
Year: 2010
Language: English
Region: Europe
Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20373199
Excerpt: The deflection profiles of a badminton racket during strokes performed by elite and world-class badminton players were recorded by strain gauges and subsequently analysed to determine the role of shaft stiffness in racket performance. Deflection behavior was consistent in all strokes across all players, suggesting a controlled use of racket elasticity. In addition, all impacts occurred within 100 ms of each other, a duration in which deflection velocity provides an increase in racket velocity, indicating that the players were able to use racket elasticity to their advantage. Since deflection b

The incidence of Achilles tendon rupture

Excerpt: During the years 1950-1973, 229 cases of Achilles tendon rupture were diagnosed in the city of Malmo. More than half of the injuries were caused by sporting activities, the most common being badminton and football (soccer). Ruptures caused by injuries other than sports injuries were found in considerably older subjects. During the period investigated the incidence of Achilles tendon rupture increased in the city more than could be accounted for by changes in the population. This increase could only be partly explained by the increasing interest in sporting activities in the population at risk.

Excerpt: No existing studies of badminton technique have used full-body biomechanical modeling based on three-dimensional (3D) motion capture to quantify the kinematics of the sport. The purposes of the current study were to: 1) quantitatively describe kinematic characteristics of the forehand smash using a 15-segment, full-body biomechanical model, 2) examine and compare kinematic differences between novice and skilled players with a focus on trunk rotation (the X-factor), and 3) through this comparison, identify principal parameters that contributed to the quality of the skill. Together, these findin

Excerpt: Players’ intelligence is commonly stressed in the badminton fields in China. Analysis of a large number of data from Combined Raven’s Test showed that the intelligence of Chinese Badminton players was just of medium level;there was no positive correlation between the intelligence and their success; and there existed negative correlation between the intelligence and  players’ training years. These results suggest that intelligence is not a decisive factor of success. Any player with a normal intelligence might become an elite. However, players’intelligence should be stre

Excerpt: By applying Norbert Elias’ figurational theory, this paper aims to discuss whether the Beijing Olympic Games had any significant long-term impact on grassroots sport participation in townships in China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 140 subjects in selected townships and findings indicate that the Olympic Games fever only existed during the holding of Olympic Games in China and did not play a long-term impact on sport participation at the grassroots level in townships. The sport participation in townships in China is still at a comparatively lower level than that at nati
