Sport Science & Medical Research Commission

The Sport Science & Medical Research Commission was created to:

  • Encourage and widen the level of investment in applied research in badminton,
  • Improve the level and quantity of scientific material available to coaches and badminton practitioners,
  • Increase the players’ and coaches’ knowledge of performance and safety at international level.

The Sport Science & Medical Research Commission is responsible for the following key areas:

  • Research
  • Assessment of annual grant applications
  • Quality / Dissemination
  • Performance / Safety

The work of the Commission is guided by its Terms of Reference which is approved by Council.

The Sport Science & Medical Research Commission is made up of the following experts:

Dr. David Cabello (Spain) – Chair

Dr. David Cabello is currently a Senior Lecturer in Sport Management at University of Granada, Spain and a MEMOS Lecturer for Olympic Solidarity (IOC) and University of Lleida (Spanish edition). His fields of expertise are: strategic direction and planning in sport and sport events management.

David has led 10 scientific projects and collaborated in 21 projects, with highlights for the following projects: Training athletes for sports events management (TASEM) and European monitoring protocol of young athletes’ health and training conditions (ARISTO). He has published over 40 articles in the webs of Science, Scopus, Emerging and other data bases. In addition, he has published  several national and international books and book chapters. He also serves as a reviewer for six ISI-Thompson journals (EJAP, JPAS, EJSS, PMS, SM, JHK).

David has a wealth of experience in sport organisation and events. He is a BWF Executive Board member and the current chair for the BWF Development and Sport for All Committee, BWF Sport Science and Medical Research Commission and the BWF Research Grants’ Assessment Panel. He is a member of the Racket Sport Science Commission and UNESCO Sport Science Commission. He is the Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Racket Sport Science.

Prof. Keiko Fonseca (Brazil)

Prof. Keiko Fonseca is currently a Full Professor with the Federal University of Technology-Paraná (UTFPR) and holds the UTFPR Honor of Merit Award (the first woman to receive this award). She has led international projects at UTFPR (SecureCloud Project, EU-BR H2020 funded), and the Smart Cities Concepts in Curitiba Project (funded by Vinnova, Sweden). She has been an active member of international projects on Smart City themes. Her research interests include real-time communication systems, data security and privacy, and image processing.

Keiko is a member of the IEEE ComSoc, the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC), and IEICE, Japan. She has an active role as volunteer for the development of the Badminton sport in Brazil and is recipient of the BWF Women in Badminton award (now Gender and Equity Award). She is a member of the International Journal of Racket Sport Science.

Dr. Tengku Fadilah binti Tengku Kamalden (Malaysia)

Dr. Tengku Fadilah is currently an Associate Professor and Head of Department of Sport Studies with Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her field of expertise is Sport Physiology and Sport Nutrition, with a passion in the studies of High-Performance Sports’ Analysis, focusing on Badminton.

Tengku Fadilah is the current chair for Badminton Association of Malaysia Coaching Education Panel Committee. She also serves as an Exco member for the National Institute of Sport Malaysia (2021-2023). She is a member of the International Journal of Racket Sport Science. She has also collaborated with Ghent University, Belgium on a BWF project relating to talent identification through bio-banding.

Dr. Martin Fahlström (Sweden)

Dr. Martin Fahlström is currently a professor and Director of Studies in Professional Development at the Medical Faculty, Umeå University, Sweden. He holds a PhD in Sports Medicine. He is also an Associate Professor in Rehabilitation Medicine. Clinically, he is a Senior Consultant specialising in Rehabilitation Medicine and Occupational Health. His research field mainly revolves around pain – in sports, rehabilitation, clinic, and lab.

He has collaborated with researchers from Trainingswissenschaft / Biomechanik / Rehabilitation, Olympiastützpunkt Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland, Germany and the Department of Psychology at Umeå Universityto on a BWF project relating to noise, stress and decision-making in sports. He is a member of the BWF research team that carry out the Global Health Badminton Study. The study aims to report injures among elite junior badminton players and investigating the risk factors associate with the injuries. He is a member of the International Journal of Racket Sport Science.

Prof. Mark King (United Kingdom)

Prof. Mark King is currently a professor of Sports Biomechanics at Loughborough University, United Kingdom. His research interest area revolves around biomechanics. He uses theoretical computer modelling and advanced experimental techniques to investigate optimum performance and minimizing injury risk across a broad range of sports including gymnastics, cricket, athletics, badminton, swimming and tennis.

Mark has a breadth of experience with international groups including former Chair of the International Society of Biomechanics Technical Group on Computer Simulation, Fellow of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports and the International Cricket Council’s Bowling Legality Group. He is a member of the BWF research team that carry out the Global Health Badminton Study. The study aims to report injures among elite junior badminton players and investigating the risk factors associated with their injuries.

Prof. Dr. Hanno Felder (Germany)

Prof. Dr. Hanno Felder is currently the Head of Science, Diagnostics and Research at Olympic Training Center – Saarbruecken and University of applied Sciences – Saarbruecken Germany. His research areas include Biomechanics, Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation and Prevention, High-Performance Sports and Research and Development. He has published more than 20 articles in journals and books. He also has published 5 books. He is a member of the research team that carry out the Global Health Badminton Study. The study aims to report injures among elite junior badminton players and investigating the risk factors associate with the injuries. He is a member of the International Journal of Racket Sport Science.

Dr. Niels Christian Kaldau (Denmark)

Dr. Niels Christian is a former Danish National Player and now an orthopaedic surgeon at Copenhagen University Hospital specialising in shoulder, hip and knee injuries. Prior becoming a surgeon, he has been coaching in various capacity including as an assistant national coach in Germany.

He is currently the president of Danish Society of Sports Medicine. He is a member of the BWF research team that carry out the Global Health Badminton Study. The study aims to report injures among elite junior badminton players and investigating the risk factors associate with the injuries. He is a member of the International Journal of Racket Sport Science.
